Perhaps due support for non-profits historically being cultivated from wealthy art patrons and big corporations, many “people on the street” have a sense that the arts as presented by our industry are not for them. Often, philanthropic endeavors have less than altruistic motives, serving to shore up a reputation or act as a hallmark of incoming transformation, and can breed suspicion in underserved neighborhoods.
