The Artist Organization Movement: Then, Now and the Future

Roberto Bedoya
Joy Silverman

Common Field Session
Organized by Courtney Fink / Common Field Director and Co-Founder

The narrative of Common Field and it’s predecessor organization NAAO (National Association of Artist Organizations) are a parallel to the narrative of the 1960’s emancipation and self-determination movements. Likewise, the current global crisis (climate change, immigration, Trump) are galvanizing forces that have a great deal of impact on artists centered practices. This session brings together seminal founders and long-time leaders of the artist space movement to connect movements then and now. It draws parallels between the early alternative space movement, the present moment with a focus on how it will help us look to and plan for the future.
