Come help us find a creative form for Common Field, one begun and continually renewed by a restless desire for something always alive and always better.

Join us for one or both of these conversations. One will build on the other. The conversations will be “shepherded” by Common Field Council Member Anne Focke.

Common Field has a brand-new, very practical legal form — it is now a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. This and other practical structures being created by council, board, and staff will allow Common Field to operate in the world as it is today.

In tandem with that effort, this session asks: Can we use the power of imagination to create a parallel form, not as pragmatic but perhaps as important, that will reflect and hold our aspirations for Common Field, its values and its spirit?

The conversations are open to anyone. They are planned as “happy hours,” that is, informal, around table(s) in a social setting. In addition to council members, a few people with helpful experience and perspective will be specifically invited to join.

During the conversations, we will consider the nature of Common Field’s spirit and soul, discussing and reshaping the premise as we go. We will search for tangible ways to express or enact the form we imagine; maybe we’ll even try them out. And we will document what happens in a way that can be improvised on and taken further at the 2018 convening.

Context for the conversation will be provided by the experience of the Common Field council members who participate and by a few materials available in advance. “A form beyond legal structures — Common Field becomes independent”
