Art Education in the Red: Strategies for Cultural Education and Resilience in Underfunded Communities
Thursday, April 30, 2020
1-2:30pm CDT
with Jessica Borusky (Atlanta, GA), Julie Clark (Tulsa, OK), Mandy Messina (Oklahoma City, OK), Suzanne C. Thomas (Oklahoma City, OK)
This Report from the Field examines how coalition building and resource-sharing for cultural education within financially unstable environments produces new ways of imagining artistic and community practices. Specifically, cultural education within mid-sized cities, the Oklahoma Teacher Walk Out in 2018, budget cuts, state-based un/involvement, and the opportunities/problematics of public-private partnerships. How does change-making begin with limited resources? How do arts organizations and educators come together through innovative/integrative strategies to generate holistic approaches toward teaching art; specifically, making space for minoritarian, underrepresented, and economically diverse participants and young artists?
This panel discussion includes audience participation in order to share ideas and resources. Viewers/participants within culturally-underfunded communities and cultural producers who work with education are encouraged to attend and participate, as this broader situation affects many locales, entities, and individuals. The panel will share the group’s workshop materials with attendees in order to pursue resource-sharing and coalition-building.
