Friday, April 24, 2020
5-6:30pm CDT
with Carol Zou (Los Angeles, CA), Carrie Schneider (Houston, TX), Ryan Dennis (Houston, TX), Sixto Wagan (Houston, TX)
The Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts – Project Row Houses Fellowships invite artists and cultural practitioners to Houston’s Third Ward neighborhood to work alongside community members, artists, urban planners, educators and policy makers. The presenters will discuss this unique partnership between Project Row Houses (PRH) and the Center for Art & Social Engagement (CASE) at the University of Houston that supports year-long research residencies in community-engaged creative practice. Formulated around PRH’s People and Place framework, the program investigates the juncture of arts and culture, community development, and neighborhood context. The presenters will reflect on the learning after three years of the fellowship including the implications of program structure, partnership, and the long-term impact on artists and communities. The panelists will share reflections on some of the fellowship’s framing questions, including: How can a history of successful practice be codified and disseminated? What does training leaders in place-based social practice entail? How can university and community-based organizations partner equitably? How can our communities and fellows benefit from both local and non-local fellows?
