How can artists, art museums and community organizations work collaboratively to build safe spaces, and through doing so further equity in their communities?
Hear from three artists and Studio Museum in Harlem staff members as they share how their studio practices have shaped the organization’s community partnerships. At a Harlem drop-in center for LGBTQ houseless youth, artist Blake Paskal – informed by their identity as a queer, gender nonconforming person – leads figurative sculpture workshops focused on memorial and the politics of representation. At a ReStart school and a residence for teens removed from their families by NYC’s Administration for Children’s Services, artist Jeannette Rodríguez Píneda shapes a curriculum about home through using bilingual education and visual storytelling to bridge the past, present and future. At Rikers Island – NYC’s principal jail complex – artist Jennifer Harley connects her site specific practice to investigate how art can help create spaces that transform oppressive systems.
