Let’s Get Real about Community Engagement - Sharing Lessons

Friday, April 24, 2020
1-2:30pm CDT

with Sarah Peters (St. Paul, MN)

“Community engagement” is a term found in every corner of the arts and non-profit sectors, but what does it really mean? Who does it well and how? What are your experiences with community engagement; what did you learn and how did it change you or your organization?

The work of sharing power with community partners and members requires cross cultural communication skills, self/organization-reflection abilities and a willingness to throw away long-held beliefs about how we should work together.

The presenter will offer questions and discussion prompts drawn from stories about their small, white-led organization’s dive into getting real about community engagement, particularly in communities of color where trust with the organization was either neutral or in deficit.

A bulk of the workshop’s time will be spent in small-group discussion around key themes and questions, followed by report backs to the larger group. Please come prepared to share and listen!
