What are the barriers that inhibit creativity and autonomy within established arts institutions? How can we, as cultural producers, work beyond these spaces to fulfill needs for artists, creatives, the wider community and ourselves? Discussing institutional demands and the struggle for work-life balance with limited resources, this open conversation tackles what it means to survive creatively and comfortably on multiple levels of an arts ecosystem. Starting with artist-centered projects in Chicago and the Bay Area, we will consider the power of creative and cultural activity in intimate, non-traditional or intuitive spaces as practices of permission-giving for both artists and administrators. In this participatory conversation, we will reflect on gaps in our own creative communities, ideate inclusive projects and then visually map them and their potential impacts together. Our questions, solutions, and reflections will live on as a digital workbook—a document of this collective conversation.
