Interested in presenting this year? Our 2021 Convening Open Call is now live. For this year’s online Convening, we’re seeking proposals for engaging and interactive sessions – including workshops, future-oriented strategizing, and field reports that facilitate value-driven discussions, tools, and skill sharing.

Below, we're including a list of Frequently Asked Questions to guide your thinking and planning before the Open Call begins.

  1. Does it cost anything to submit a proposal?

No – it is free to apply once you’re a member of Common Field, and you can join for free using the code ‘CF2021’. To learn more about how to become a member, visit We encourage current members to update their profiles now before submitting their Open Call application.

  2. Can my proposal include people who aren’t members of Common Field?

Yes. The proposal’s primary contact (Session Organizer) must be a current Common Field Network member. You are welcome to include presenters who are not members in your proposal. If selected, all presenters will be encouraged to become Network members.

  3. Can you give me any guidelines to help with my idea for a proposal? Where can I find 2021 Convening-related topics and themes?

Detailed guidelines for proposals are available here. We encourage members to creatively interpret session structures and conceptual content based on what feels meaningful to you, your organization, and your communities of practice.

Common Field is a platform for discussing a wide breadth of issues facing arts and culture workers across the country. We host regional meet-ups and publish critical thinking from a variety of perspectives. Exploring these resources, along with the extensive Convening Archives may be useful in formulating your idea.

  4. How many proposals can an organization or individual submit?

You are welcome to submit as many proposals as you'd like, though only one proposal per individual or organization can be selected. Presenters may only serve as a presenter or organizer in one session at the Convening.

  5. I want to propose my own session and I was invited to present in someone else’s session. Can I do both?

No. While both applications can be submitted, only one may be accepted.

  6. Do we need to have a moderator for our proposed panel?

You do not need to have a moderator for your proposed panel. In fact, we believe not every panel needs a moderator. Please feel free to propose a format that works best for your proposed session. A moderator does count towards the total number of presenters allowed per session, so if you have a moderator, then only three presenters may be proposed.

  7. If I am accepted, do I have to pay to attend the Convening?

You do not have to pay to attend the Convening if you are a presenter or organizer. If you are selected as a presenter, you will be given a $250 honorarium for your contribution and free registration to this year's Convening.

  8. Who is reviewing proposals?

Proposals are reviewed by a jury of national practitioners in the field, including Partners and Common Field Board members.

  9. When will I be notified of the status of my proposal?

You will be notified by the end of July 2021.

  10. Can I attend the Convening if my proposal is not accepted?

Absolutely! Public registration will be online later this year.

  11. I may need financial assistance to attend the 2021 Convening. Can Common Field support my participation?

Common Field will offer a scholarship program to support attendee participation. Details around the scholarship, as well as an application, will be shared this summer. Please make sure that you are following us on social media and are signed up for our email list to be notified when the application for scholarships is available.

  12. How many sessions and presenters will you accept from this Open Call?

We anticipate accepting 12-18 sessions this year, including contributions from 40-60 presenters.

  13. I am an individual and I would like to present. Can I apply with my idea/paper/etc. and Common Field will place me on a panel/discussion/etc?

No, we only accept proposals for stand-alone sessions. We are unable to accept proposals from individuals who wish to be placed into a session. However, we encourage you to use the Network map and list to connect with folks who are also working on proposals! You can search by location, work, structure, budget, age, team, and geography.
