Fellows

Our 2021 Convening Partners Martina Dodd, Racing Magpie, and Wide Awakes curated a selection of artists for our new Convening Fellowship program — with each invited Fellow receiving funds to support both their ongoing work and individual contributions to this year’s Convening program.

Talon Bazille

Selected by Racing Magpie, Bazille is a rap artist/poet from the Crow Creek Dakota and Cheyenne River Lakota tribes of South Dakota. A University of Pennsylvania alum, Bazille graduated in 2015 with a bachelor’s in psychology. Bazille is currently the head of Wonahun Was’te’ Studios (“Good, healing sound of music” —Ciye’ General ThunderHawk), providing recording studio access around central South Dakota. The studio was supported in 2019 by First People’s Fund’s Cultural Capital Fellowship. He is currently working on his next release, Ghost Plant, which features artwork from Sicangu Lakota artist Tani Gordon. For more information, visit www.BAZTK.com.

Angela N. Carroll

Selected by Martina Dodd, Carroll is an artist-archivist, and an investigator of art history and culture. She is a curator and contributing writer for Saint Heron, Sugarcane Magazine, Black Art in America, BmoreArt, and others. She received her MFA in Digital Arts and New Media from the University of California at Santa Cruz and intermittently teaches within the Film and Moving Image program at Stevenson University and the FYE program at MICA in Baltimore, Maryland.

Suzanne Kite

Selected by Racing Magpie, Kite is an Oglala Lakota performance artist, visual artist, and composer, a PhD candidate at Concordia University, Research Assistant for the Initiative for Indigenous Futures, a 2019 Trudeau Scholar, a 2020 Tulsa Artist Fellow, and a 2020 Women at Sundance x Adobe Fellow. Her research is concerned with contemporary Lakota ontologies through research-creation, computational media, and performance practice.

Tony Patrick

Selected by Wide Awakes, Patrick is a world-builder/facilitator whose practice revolves around creating future worlds which are innovative and culturally abundant for all people. He's a founding member of The Guild of Future Architects, has facilitated world-building sessions for Sundance, Buckminster Fuller Institute, Guggenheim Museum, and more. He’s also the founder of Tenfold Gaming Initiative (that brings underrepresented students to game design/tech careers), an NYU ITP/IMA professor, writer of a series of published comics (Batman & The Signal, X'ed), and is an author/director of numerous screenplays, short films and documentaries (HBO, Cinemax, CBC).
