Drawing upon personal experience, Dreaming Crip Futurity’s presenters will explore the possibilities for disability futures in the arts through the collective lenses of their respective art practices. As a group of disabled artists brought together by the 2021 Art and Disability Residency, the cohort will explore the non-singularity of the crip experience while using their work to explore ideas of crip time, crip histories, and crip futures.

Disabled artistic practices inherently engage with issues of capacity. The act of making, especially within this last year, in itself is an act of advocacy. As a group of artists and advocates, we are brought together by disability art and dreaming of a future where disabled body-minds can not just survive but flourish. Building upon the dreams of our crip ancestors, we use our art practices to look forward to what we can create. In this future, multiple dimensions of accessibility will be embraced. In this future time is not linear.

In this session, we will share these dreams in hopes of shifting frameworks of understanding disability and building a more accessible and supportive artistic community. As one of our outreach methods, we will provide resources that touch on and expand some of the themes that the session explores, sharing our crip dreams with other communities. We will create a space where we can collectively brainstorm our dreams for disability futures, and tangible steps rooted in interdependence, care networks, creativity, and access to make them a reality.

Megan Bent is an artist who explores Disability Aesthetics, Culture, and Identity through alternative process photography, film, and installation. Her artwork has been exhibited widely across the United States and she recently exhibited new video work at F1963 in Busan, South Korea. She is currently an artist in residence at Art Beyond Sight’s 2021 Art + Disability Residency, and has been an artist-in-residence at the Nobles School in Dedham, MA, and the Honolulu Museum of Art, HI. She has presented her work at The Pacific Rim International Conference on Disability and Diversity in Honolulu, HI, at "Other Bodies: (Self) Representation, Disability and the Media" at the University of Westminster in London, U.K., and at "Critical Junctures" at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Her work has been written about in "Too Tired Project", "Rfotofolio", "Screen Bodies Journal", and "Float Photography Magazine".

Aurora Berger is a queer disabled artist working with photographic and alternative processes. Coming from an academic background, and currently working in education, Berger uses language and imagery to challenge ableist and heteronormative ideas. She creates works that investigate the concepts of normalcy, disability, agency, visual acuity, and interpretation. Berger holds an MFA from Claremont Graduate University, as well as a BFA and BA in Art Education from Prescott College. She is the recipient of the Kennedy Center VSA and Wynn Newhouse awards, and is a current resident of the Art and Disability program through Art Beyond Sight and the 2021 Slant Projects artist programme. Berger has presented her work at several conferences including the 2020 College Art Association National Conference and her writing has been published by the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment, Drkrm Editions, and in a forthcoming anthology from Brill | Sense.

Jillian Crochet is a Bay Area based interdisciplinary artist working in sculpture, video, and performance to confront grief and disability. Using natural/unnatural elements, her practice questions histories of scientific research, the medical model, desire for control, and the complex ethics of genetics and experimentation. Her practice seeks to liberate the disabled body from normalized marginalization and oppression. What is natural/unnatural? What bodies are included/excluded -- important? She is a current Graduate Fellow at Headlands Center for the Arts and a 2020 Artist in Residence at Art Beyond Sight’s Art & Disability program. She earned her BFA from the University of Alabama in 2007 and an MFA in Fine Arts from California College of the Arts in 2020.

Sara Weininger is a visual artist living and working in New York. Imbued in her work is the idea that there is a profound effect of individual, seemingly small, and insignificant parts upon the whole. In speaking about her studio she asserts that “the placement of my inhaler on its side, overlooking the small clay pot with a canvas flower, creates a specific narrative, one that would drastically change if something were moved out of place.” It is the observation of the objects in her lived environment that define Sara’s work. Her body of work includes paintings and constructed spaces but is grounded in drawing.
