Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo and Mitsuko Brooks met at a lunch break during the recent Common Field Convening in Los Angeles. Mitsuko Brooks was having social phobia blockages preventing her from meeting new people even though one of the reasons why she went to the convening was to meet people. Sitting opposite from each other, Lukaza and Mitsuka met through a common friend (and presenter at the Convening), Onya Hogan-Finlay, who Mitsuko met when she was 18 years old and Lukaza had met earlier that year when they were both residents at Vermont Studio Center. We instantly connected and started talking! Mitsuko explained that her practice was mainly centered around communication (?) and often looked like mail art, so Lukaza asked Mitsuko if she would be into sending some of her mail art to the gallery she runs, Nook Gallery.

Getting to know you/getting to know all about you, would be a 6 month long correspondence project between Mitsuko Brooks and Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo, as a way of getting to know each other, talking about what drew us to Common Field, and examine how our mail art exchanges might inspire us to create new work and connect with a new people who live in other cities. Each artist will scan their pieces before mailing them out to keep record and will sent at least one piece of mail a month to the other person. At the end of the 6 month conversation, the project will conclude in two shows, Lukaza’s mail art will be installed inside Mitsuko’s studio in Los Angeles and Mitsuko’s mail art will be installed in Nook Gallery in Oakland.

This project hopes to act as a model for continuing the charged conversations that happen when Common Field members come together at the convenings and bring them out into our lives and work beyond. Even though there aren’t strict themes for this projects, the artists will be asked to draw upon their time at the Los Angeles Convening and see where that take them.

This project was funded by a Common Field Field Grant!
