Executive Director

POSITION AVAILABLE: Executive Director
Southern Exposure seeks an accomplished arts administrator to lead the organization in partnership with our Artistic Director. As co-directors, the Executive Director and Artistic Director are responsible for providing vision and direction for the organization, managing resources for financial stability, and advancing SoEx’s artistic mission. Both leaders will report directly to the Board of Directors. While the Executive Director and Artistic Director each have their own distinct areas of responsibility, SoEx is committed to a highly collaborative management culture in which most thinking, communication and decision making are open and transparent between all staff and board.

Executive Director Focus: The Executive Director drives all fundraising, actively soliciting sources of income for a yearly operating budget of $750,000. In addition, the Executive Director oversees all finance, operations, and marketing efforts.​

Schedule: 40+ hours/week (1 FTE), Monday - Friday, frequent evenings and weekends
Status: Salaried, Exempt

ABOUT SOUTHERN EXPOSURE (SoEx)
An active presence in the Bay Area since 1974, SoEx is continually evolving in response to the needs of artists and the community while engaging the public in artists' work. Central to our mission is to remain the most accessible space for visual artists to produce and present new work both on and off-site, learn and connect. SoEx provides visual artists with the tools and resources they need to experiment in an open and supportive environment. We also work to advocate to new, diverse audiences and build an ever-growing community of enthusiasts and supporters of the visual arts. Nationally known for extensive and innovative programming, SoEx acts as an extraordinary resource center and forum for Bay Area and national artists and youth in the public realm.

The organization is well positioned for the next generation of leadership. SoEx has an established track record and reputation, both locally and nationally, for supporting artistic risk-taking and experimental work in a professional setting. As a leader in the field, SoEx has pioneered nationally emulated models such as our regranting program Alternative Exposure, and our Curatorial Council, acting as a valuable resource for our peers. Located in San Francisco's Mission District, SoEx is ready to address long-term strategies for its future, and deepen engagement with diverse artists and audiences in a city undergoing rapid and enormous change.

RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:

FUNDRAISING

Individual Giving

Develop donor pipeline and individual donor cultivation plans. Ensure that donor interactions are tracked in donor database.

Cultivate relationships with donors. Schedule and conduct individual donor meetings, and make donor-specific funding requests.

With Engagement Coordinator, plan donor cultivation events. Work to convert fundraising event attendees into long-term, high-level donors.

Develop and enact donor engagement and retention plans.

Foundation and Corporate Giving

Manage grant-writing to foundations and corporations.

Expand pipeline, develop Moves Management Plans for, and cultivate relationships with, institutional funders.

Hire and manage part-time grant writers as needed. Collaborate with staff to produce grant applications and develop relationships with funders.

With Southern Exposure staff, write grant final reports.

Develop grant application schedule and ensure that grant deadlines are met.

Fundraising Events

Set fundraising targets for fundraising events including the annual benefit Auction and Monster Drawing Rally, and ensure that event planning supports fundraising goals to the greatest extent possible.

Oversee event production in collaboration with staff.

Other Earned Income

With Engagement Coordinator, set targets for facility rentals, and ensure that the rental program is promoted widely and effectively.

Cultivate and expand strategic corporate partnerships and alliances.

Manage earned income initiatives.

General Fundraising

Create comprehensive fundraising plan with individual, foundation, corporate and earned income targets, including probability estimates.

Update plan on monthly basis and report to Board fundraising progress on a monthly basis.

Manage Fundraising Committee.

FINANCE AND ADMINISTRATION

In consultation with staff, develop an annual operating plan and balanced budget for review and approval by the Board of Directors.

Provide prudent financial management and productive, efficient use of Southern Exposure’s resources.

Manage cash flow and budget forecasting.

With Accountant, undergo Monthly Financial Review.

Ensure that permits, licenses, and insurance are current.

Communicate with City agents and landlord.

STAFF MANAGEMENT

In conjunction with the Artistic Director, develop, mentor, and retain a highly qualified, diverse and committed staff, fostering opportunities for professional growth, collaboration, and meaningful engagement.

Create and implement an annual performance review plan and lead staff in the process, ensuring that individual staff goals are being met.

Meet with direct reports on a weekly basis.

COMMUNICATIONS/MARKETING

Oversee the development of comprehensive communications plans and strategies to promote awareness, appreciation, and support for Southern Exposure locally, regionally, and nationally.

Oversee the development of all institutional branding efforts, including the website, social media and printed materials.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT

With the Artistic Director, ensure sound planning and support for program integrity and excellence, evaluate program impact, and clarify priorities for new areas of development.

GENERAL OPERATIONS

Oversee day-to-day operations of the organization.

Foster and strengthen a sustainable work environment and welcoming community space.

EVALUATION

Evaluate the impact, efficacy, and sustainability of current programs; and to establish priorities, processes, and resources for new program development.

Lead strategic planning efforts and effective, progressive plan implementation.

ADVOCACY

Serve as an advocate of Southern Exposure’s mission and act as a spokesperson to the public and media, and work to enhance the reputation, role and recognition of Southern Exposure in the broader community.

Build and enhance relationships with artists, neighbors, members, donors and business sponsors by attending and organizing events, speaking to gallery visitors, and meeting with tour groups and students.

Enhance and expand meaningful connections, partnerships, and strategic alliances to advance Southern Exposure’s vision, impact, and resources.

BOARD

Collaborate with the Board on strategic planning and lead implementation and evaluation.

Create Board agendas and attend full Board and Board committee meetings.

Participate in the recruitment and onboarding of new Board members.

Keep Board apprised of changes in organization’s financial, staff, and programming health in a timely manner.

QUALIFICATIONS AND APPLICATION INFORMATION

Qualifications
Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s Degree plus a minimum of five years experience in non-profit arts administration. The applicant is a strategic and savvy manager with a passion and commitment for the visual arts. The position requires strong fundraising chops and prudent financial management. The ED must be an inspiring leader of both SoEx staff and community. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are a must, and an ability to lead and collaborate in an open, dynamic and continually shifting environment. Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite preferred, experience with CiviCRM or other database programs, HTML, Drupal or simple email services (SES) a plus.
