Transformer seeks a creative, strategic, and detail-oriented communications professional to join our ambitious arts management team. The Marketing & Communications Associate gives voice to a diverse array of contemporary artists through Transformer’s prolific array of exhibitions and programs.

Transformer is an artist-centered visual arts non-profit based in Washington, DC. Our mission is to connect, elevate, and serve a diversity of emerging artists and arts leaders. We develop innovative, multi-faceted exhibition and program platforms, both independently and through global partnerships, to present artists’ evolving ideas and work, advance new and best visual arts practices, and engage audiences with emerging contemporary art. Position Description:

Transformer’s Marketing & Communications Associate will help manage and grow Transformer’s social media channels, support storytelling efforts, and build deeper relationships with a diverse set of partners across the DMV and beyond. Working closely with all staff, the Marketing & Communications Associate is responsible for Transformer’s overall communications, messaging, and branding activities, including executing digital messaging, website, and social media. The Communications Associate must be able to communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders. They should be comfortable working independently and collaboratively within a small, close-knit team and thrive in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment. The Marketing & Communications Associate must be a great relationship-builder and a savvy project manager who is comfortable setting up systems and juggling multiple projects, creatively connecting the dots between fundraising, communications, and programming. They will report to the Development & Operations Manager, with overall supervision by the Executive & Artistic Director.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills Requirements – A successful candidate will have:

● 1-3 years of experience in an arts marketing or communications role, experience in a nonprofit setting preferred.

● Excellent editing, proofreading, presentation, and interpersonal skills with strong attention to detail

● Friendly, engaging, and collaborative demeanor; impeccable customer service

● Digital marketing, website management and social media savvy, including interpreting analytics

● Experience executing public education and/or marketing campaigns, developing print and digital promotional and marketing materials including pitch decks and annual reports

● Proficiency with software applications including Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite

● Experience/familiarity with HTML, web editing and design, Squarespace, WordPress, and Constant Contact

● Graphic design skills (Photoshop, Publisher, and/or InDesign) for in-house graphic production + video editing skills

●Experience working in a fast-paced environment, with a focus on developing mission-driven initiatives • Excellent time management skills, including the ability to meet established goals and deadlines and work on multiple projects simultaneously while managing deadlines.

● Knowledge of and interest in DC, national and international contemporary arts landscape • Understanding of and commitment to the mission and work of Transformer

● Availability to work some evenings and weekends

Key Responsibilities:

Marketing & Communications:

●Support development of an inclusive communications program to engage a diverse public

●Develop and maintain a communications calendar, content plan, and design and approval process covering all social media and online and offline communications.

●Plan marketing campaigns to support exhibitions, events, and online programs

●Develop, coordinate, write, edit, and distribute electronic newsletters, press releases, statements, and other written and visual content to support marketing campaigns

●Support media relations and other relevant external partner relationships, including developing press contacts, and as needed, identifying news opportunities, pitching stories and coordinating interviews.

●Monitor and report progress towards attendance and revenue goals

●Maintain all Transformer digital properties including website, social media platforms, and digital archives

●Manage the back end of the email system (Constant Contact), including creating lists, cleaning lists, and setting up emails.

●Stay abreast of the latest software and practices in marketing, and proactively suggest improvements


●Develop communications strategies that will broaden programmatic reach and deepen awareness that leads to broader financial impact.

●Act as liaison between our work and our audience, effectively translating program verbiage and housing data into relatable language for donor communications and expanding audience base.

●Assist the Development & Operations Manager by maintaining customer/donor database records • Periodically author content for development communications

●Coordinate creation and oversight of event invites, mailing lists, and guest lists


● Provide occasional administrative support to the Executive & Artistic Director

● Assist team members with the general upkeep of Transformer’s exhibition space, storage unit, physical archives

● Support documentation/tracking of metrics associated with programming, development and cultivation events

● Assist with artwork sales

● Occasionally support exhibition install, de-install

Salary and benefits: Starting salary range of $38,000 - $45,000 annually commensurate with experience. Benefits include: health insurance reimbursement, flexible scheduling, generous paid vacation time, sick leave, and federal holidays. Advancement opportunities.
