Common Field is Hiring: Zoom Pilot (part-time, temporary)

Hours: October 13-31, 5-10 hrs/wk; November 1-15, 15-20 hrs/wk.You must be available all day (~ 11am-8pm Eastern) for the following dates: November 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13.

Rate: $30/hour
Reports To: Convening Technology Producer

Location: This position is remote and does not require travel. Common Field is a 501(c)3 incorporated in California but our current staff operates 100% remotely, working across multiple states and time zones.

Position Summary: Directly reporting to Common Field’s Convening Technology Producer and working with the Convening Team, Zoom Pilots are responsible for ensuring that Convening sessions run safely and smoothly. Zoom pilots run technical elements of sessions, working closely with CART captioners, ASL interpreters, translators, and session presenters. Zoom pilots will attend pre-Convening check-ins with the sessions that they will be overseeing, and be responsible for running day-of technology checks with presenters before sessions. At times, Zoom Pilots may work closely alongside Common Field staff to implement our digital safety plan, especially incident response, including muting, removing, or otherwise restricting attendees who do not adhere to the Convening’s community care agreement.

Work Schedule: In the weeks leading up to the Convening, Zoom pilots will attend an orientation and training session, as well as check-ins with session presenters. Between October 15 and October 31, we anticipate that Zoom pilots will work about 10 hours each week. During the weeks of the Convening (November 1-15), we anticipate that Zoom pilots will work about 25 hours each week, including attendance at all-team check-ins and Convening programming hours.

  • Before Convening

    • Attend 90-minute Zoom Pilot orientation

    • For sessions in which you will be acting as Zoom Pilot, attend technology check-in sessions with presenters in two weeks leading up to Convening.

  • During Convening

    • Open and close Zoom sessions: run pre-session green room; screen share session opening slides and music.

    • Assist presenters in sharing screens, presentations, and videos.

    • Oversee in-session implementation of translators, ASL interpreters, and CART captioners.

    • Assist Common Field staff to ensure that Common Field’s community standards are being met, and assist in executing response plan when necessary.

      • When necessary, may include muting participants, removing and banning participants, and shutting down chat features.

    • Ensure steps are taken to record and archive sessions where appropriate.

  • After Convening

    • Archive recordings & chat logs of sessions.


  • Working knowledge of:

    • Zoom, both meeting and webinar formats

    • Google Drive

    • Best practices for moderation

    • Knowledge of platforms outside of Zoom (Gather, Whereby, etc.) a plus!

  • Detail-oriented.

  • Strong communication skills, especially when dealing with a wide range of presenters and participants.

  • Familiarity with a broad range of arts, humanities, and social justice practices.

  • Comfort working across a range of cultural contexts.
