Springboard for the Arts // Creative Exchange

Saint Paul, MN

Creative Exchange is a platform sharing artful ideas for stronger communities.

Creative Exchange is the national program of Springboard for the Arts, an artist-led nonprofit based in Minnesota. On this platform we share stories of artists and their impact in community, and free, practical toolkits for artist-engaged programs, from professional development to creative placemaking to fun projects to bring people together. Toolkits are free, created from practical projects, and are great for replication or to inspire your next project or partnership.

Founded as an independent non-profit in 1991, Springboard for the Arts is an economic and community development organization for artists and by artists. Our work is about building stronger communities, neighborhoods, and economies, where artists are key contributors to community issues and are visible and valued for the impact they create. We do this work by creating simple, practical solutions and systems to support artists. Those programs support our goal to help create a local culture movement.

Springboard for the Arts’ work focuses on two key outcomes based on our mission – that every artist in the US has access to the tools they need to make a living and a life and impact their community; and every community in the US has access to their local creative capacity.

From our home in Minnesota, with offices in Saint Paul and Fergus Falls, we build the programs to achieve these outcomes, and then share our work nationally. We offer professional development resources like Work of Art: Business Skills for Artists workshops, panels and one-on-one consulting. We develop innovative resources around healthcare and legal support for artists. We build community development programs and projects that include artists at their core, and create new market opportunities for artists. We have done this work with partners like the Forum of Regional Arts Councils, the City of St. Paul, neighborhood organizations and private groups. Nationally, we create shareable toolkits for our programs, offer consulting, and lead train-the-trainer sessions to expand our work and scale our model.
