Signal Fire

Signal Fire works at the intersection of the creative arts and environmental activism. Our mission is to “build the cultural value of the natural world by connecting artists to our remaining wild places. Our trips and projects foster self-resilience, creative energy, and interdisciplinary collaboration. We advocate for land justice and the protection of threatened land and water.” Our main activities involve leading camping and backpacking trips to artists from all creative backgrounds on public lands.

We are based in Portland, Oregon, and our projects extend throughout the Western US, operating seasonally in the field, with year-round events in the city. Since 2009 we have hosted nearly 350 artists through our residencies and retreats.
