Bob Baker Marionette Theater

Los Angeles, CA

The Bob Baker Marionette Theater is Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #958. With over 300 performances a year, utilizing over 2000 handcrafted puppets, the Theater caters to birthday parties, school groups, weddings, and community functions of all sorts. In 2019, after over 55 years of magic and having entertained over one million children of all ages, the Bob Baker Marionette Theater moved from its historic location at 1345 W. 1st St. to a 1923 vaudeville theater at 4949 York Blvd. in Highland Park. The Theater is excited to continue its tradition of enchanting entertainment for all ages at its new location for another 55 years! The preview season for the Theater began in June, with a grand opening scheduled for November 2019.

Today, our mission is to provide unique theatrical experiences; to educate, celebrate and rejuvenate puppetry and the allied arts. Furthermore, Bob Baker Marionette Theater is now a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

Our current programs include regular puppet shows which are performed weekdays at 10:30am primarily for field trips and school groups, weekend puppet shows for the general public, evening special events that expand upon our regular programming for adult audiences, and regular summer camps, residencies, and programs across Los Angeles ranging from a one-day performance or workshop to a months long exhibition or programming series. Though the core of all of our programming is puppet making and performance, the outcomes of our programs and shows are all entirely different. Our core weekday shows are oftentimes the first theatrical experience for a child, and as a result expose this audience to lighting, choreography, puppetry, and musical cues. A nighttime movie screening and puppet show opens up an entirely new way to engage with marionettes through film or music for a more adult audience.

We are proud that through the use of our historic body of work we are able to engage people in our Theater, on the road, at schools or nursing homes in a variety of ways that leaves them feeling enchanted, inspired, and motivated to explore the incredible field of puppetry and the allied arts.
