Public Media Institute

Chicago, IL

Public Media Institute (PMI)’s mission is to create, incubate, and sustain innovative cultural programming through the production of socially engaged projects, events, spaces, exhibitions, and media. Founded at the turn of the 21st century, PMI has been committed to imaging and fostering the future of region’s cultural ecology. Centered and amplified out of our home base in the Southside neighborhood of Bridgeport, programming highlights include our annual arts convergence, Version Festival, and Typeforce, an annual international exhibit of text-based designers and artists. PMI produces over 50 exhibitions & events annually in partnership with local artists and collectives. In 2015 PMI focused the community’s cultural momentum to launch a new radio station, WLPN-LP 105.5 FM Lumpen Radio. With access to 2.3 million listeners in Chicago and global listeners via web and mobile devices, Lumpen Radio has proven to be a great platform for the arts and culture community. In an average month over 300 Djs, cultural workers, guests and radio personalities broadcast on Lumpen Radio. With circulations reaching an estimated 5,000+ people an issue, PMI continues to publish several periodicals, including the long-running Lumpen Magazine (launched in 1991) as will as Proximity Magazine, the international arts and culture journal, Materiel Magazine, The Bridgeport International, and Mash Tun Journal.
