Disparate Minds

Chicago, US

Disparate Minds is an ongoing, interdisciplinary endeavor that amplifies the marginalized voices of artists with developmental disabilities through essays, exhibition reviews, interviews, curatorial projects, and lectures. As artists currently creating work in facilitated studios converge with the broader, increasingly pluralistic art world, we discuss their work in a contemporary context in order to progress past static narratives associated with the Outsider Art discourse. Co-founders Andreana Donahue and Tim Ortiz share insight informed by extensive experience working at the intersection of art and disability as practicing artists, artist facilitators, dedicated advocates, and most significantly in previously co-managing a progressive art studio for eighty self-taught artists with developmental disabilities in Nevada. Recent lectures include Neurodiversity in Contemporary Art at Haverford College in Haverford, PA, Progressive Practices at Center for Creative Works in Philadelphia, and Shifting Paradigms at Sierra Nevada College in Lake Tahoe, NV.
