Denise Valentine

Master Storyteller, Story Activist, Historical Performer, Cultural Arts Consultant

Teller of forgotten and neglected histories; Culture bearer and conduit of cultural values and traditions between societies. My role is to provide an empowering cultural context needed to confront the history and legacy of race, class and other inequities, to reclaim lost (hi)stories, and to create new “storyholders” and storytellers.

Member of the National Association of Black Storytellers, Inc. Career highlights include performing at the Sibikwa Theatre in Benoni, South Africa, the Ananse SoundSplash Storytelling Festival in Jamaica, West Indies, and Pete Seeger’s Clearwater Festival on the Hudson River in New York, and collaborator for Philadelphia Assembled, a collaborative, investigative art project of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
