Clay on Main

Oley, PA

Clay on Main is a non-profit art community and studio resource center located in Oley, PA.  CoM developed organically, beginning with a collaboration of artists who regularly worked together, and the spirit of cooperation and commitment to creativity remains at the forefront of our mission and our space.  Each person who joins our community, whether as a student, co-op member, or teacher, brings her own style and ability to a cooperative studio environment that allows discovery, collaboration, and personal development.

Our mission is simple: to offer artists time and space to create. Clay on Main provides a rich variety of benefits that spring from that brief phrase.  We allow Berks County residents from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds, political orientations, and ages to gather and share ideas, learn from one another, and express emotional truths in a supportive environment.  The heart of Clay on Main is, of course, our well-equipped ceramics studio, where artists can feel at home and allow their creative process to unfold naturally, and beginners are encouraged to experiment as they develop their technical expertise.  We serve the local community with a variety of programs, teaching community classes and workshops in clay, glass, fiber arts, drawing and painting (and more!) for adults and children, and also host visiting artists and collaborate with other non-profit organizations to offer learning opportunities through art.

In addition to our clay studio, Clay on Main also houses a cooperative gallery serving as a venue for the display and sale of members’ and guest artists’ work.  We provide exhibition opportunities to regional artists, and also show work from non-local artists, allowing rural Berks County to remain in dialogue with the international art world.  We are also proud to host the Half Moon Cafe, a venue for local musicians, with approximately twelve performances per year, in addition to monthly Open Mics and Uke Jams.  2017-18 marks the beginning of a collaboration with Meadowood Music, as their staff is facilitating the Half Moon.

Our building is very important to our work, but we also strive to reach people who might not be able to travel to Main Street in Oley.  We are very active with outreach activities, traveling to senior and community centers and local festivals with art projects specially designed to be accessible to all members of our community.

Clay on Main is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization.  While we have several part-time paid staff members, the majority of the work of directing and maintaining the studio, gallery, programming, and outreach is performed by dedicated volunteers.  We are motivated the power and potential of art and community, and all of our members are excellent stewards of our resources.  Please stop by and visit sometime!
