Vivarium Meconium Lab

miami, FL

The Vivarium Meconium Laboratory (VML) is a butterfly rearing and painting lab where I adapt native species conservation techniques to raise with the diligence of scientific methodology. The laboratory takes the form of a quarantined environment where I raise butterflies with the propose of collecting their meconium, the fluid released upon emergence from the chrysalis. The secretions are collected onto watercolor paper laid beneath a grid of emerging chrysalises. The chromatic secretions splatter onto the paper documenting the metamorphosis creating a series of abstract paintings.
After their emergence the system comes full circle, and the butterflies are released into the South Florida ecosystem via gardens cultivated and partnered throughout the community.
