Bas Fisher Invitational

Miami, FL

Mission

BFI is an artist-run presenting organization dedicated to creativity, experimentation, and discourse in contemporary art. BFI creates a bridge between Miami and the international art world by curating programs featuring both local and global artists at sites throughout Miami-Dade County, and in collaboration with national and international partnering organizations. BFI fosters community by offering support for artist projects, through WATERPROOF MIAMI a site-specific curatorial platform through which we present exhibitions and public programming that directly address environmental issues facing South Florida; and WEIRD MIAMI a series of artist-led tours that show locals and visitors Miami through artists’ eyes.

Organization History

Bas Fisher Invitational (BFI) is a 501c3 artist-run alternative art space founded in Miami in 2004 by artists Naomi Fisher and Hernan Bas, currently directed by Fisher. Operating under the umbrella of the Miami Foundation since 2008, BFI was awarded 501c3 status in May of 2015.

From inception, BFI has been active in the community, collaborating with local organizations such as Perez Art Museum Miami, YoungArts, Florida International University’s School of Architecture, Little Haiti Cultural Center, O,Miami Poetry Festival and serving as co-host and presenter of the Miami 2016 Common Field Convening.

Having facilitated over 50 exhibitions, lectures, performances, and events by a range of local and national artists of diverse backgrounds that are free to the public, BFI’s primary curatorial initiatives are:

WATERPROOF MIAMI - a site-specific curatorial platform through which we present exhibitions and public programming that directly address environmental issues facing South Florida, in collaboration with Bridge Initiative.

NOMADIC MIAMI - an experimental model for presenting art through performances and programs in site-specific locations that let artists lead the way to determine the best locations and methods to present their work.

WEIRD MIAMI - a behind the scenes look at the city and its artistic offerings through artist led bus tours, inviting artists to create programming that reflects their relationship to the city.

ARTIST SWAPS - a program that raises the profile of artist-run galleries and artist initiated projects through gallery swaps and exchanges with artists from Miami.

BFI prioritizes working with artists who live in, grew up in, or spent significant time in Miami. Keeping the network of exchange between artists and curators who have ties with the city bolsters the local community’s ability to participate in the global art world.
