Field News Winter 2017

We’d like to again thank everyone for taking part in the Common Field’s 2017 Los Angeles Convening. Every participant, organizer, presenter, supporter, partner, volunteer, artist, host — we value and appreciate you!

...and a 2017 Convening recap!

441 people came to LA from 39 states to participate in 35 sessions. 133 of those were presenters. Nearly half the attendees were from out of state, with the other half traveling from all regions of California. 73% of attendees were at the Convening for the first time, with 27% of attendees returning for a 2nd, 3rd or 4th time. In 2017, we organized twice as many sessions and hosted nearly 100 more attendees than in 2016. It's incredibly exciting to watch the Convening grow!

Convening Resources

In the spirit of sharing and open communication, we’re ensuring that all Convening material is available for members and non-members alike. 2017’s Convening program, livestreams of our main sessions and opening remarks, notes from all breakout sessions, and photos from the weekend are all available on our new website. We’ll release more Convening material next year. Stay tuned!

Collect, Preserve and Share: Activating the Archive

DIRT, an independent platform for accessible critical arts discourse within the DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area, staged ‘Collect, Preserve And Share: Activating The Archive,' a live archiving project during this year’s Convening with Common Field’s support. DIRT collected “notes, ephemera, doodles, oral accounts, images, pocket contents & anecdotes” and more, all available here.

Announcing Fall 2017 Field Grant Recipients

In this Field Grant round, we awarded two grants selected by an outside panel of four active Common Field Network Members. Grantees are Artspace (New Haven, CT) in collaboration with Franklin Street Works (Stamford, CT) and Real Art Ways (Hartford, CT); and Mitsuko Brooks and Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo. Check back in February 2018 for next year's reimagined guidelines and deadlines. READ MORE.

Read the 2017 Field Perspectives

If you missed our Field Perspectives essays, it’s not too late to read them!

Field Perspectives is our yearly co-publishing initiative. In 2017, we collaborated with Network Member arts publications ARTS.BLACK, Art Practical, The Chart, Contemporary Art Review Los Angeles, contemptorary, DIRT, Pelican Bomb, Temporary Art Review, and X-TRA. All partners commissioned writing aiming to catalyze discussion before, during and after the Los Angeles 2017 Convening.

And lastly....

From all of us at Common Field, have a great new year! We thank you again for all of your support, and look forward to speaking, collaborating with, and hearing from you in 2018.

Special thanks to The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Philip and Muriel Berman Foundation, the Hemera Foundation, the Knight Foundation, the Metabolic Studio, and the Wilhelm Family Foundation for their generous support of Common Field.
