The Common Field 2016 Miami Convening schedule is online!

The Convening, brought to you by Common Field, BFI, Cannonball, Dimensions Variable, and Locust Projects, will bring together 350+ arts organizers and 75 presenters in Miami, Florida from October 20-23, 2016 to explore arts organizing in a time of accelerated capitalism. The program of panels, workshops, tours, dinners, and parties will address topics including accelerations, gentrification, transitions, and critical practice. Opening Ceremony // Thursday night features performance by Dream Defenders and a keynote by Edouard Duval-Carrié.

Panels // Topics include Art Making Under Accelerated Capitalism, Transitions: Evolving Organization Models, Gentrification and Sustaining Neighborhoods and Critical Programs, Critical Ideas.

Breakouts // Sessions include Possibilities of New Ways of Living, Art & Economics 101, A Labor of Love is Still Labor: W.A.G.E. and Artists Equity, Rethinking Common Models: Creating Institutional Hybrids, Then and Now: History of Artist-runs and Defunct Spaces, A Place for Everything: Acquire, Lease, Barter or Nomadic, Taking Collaborative Action, Art-Washing, The SoHo Effect/Detangling Culpability, Making Institutions Care: A Conversation between Recess & Canaries, Common Field Futures and many more.

Workshops // Reflections on Power, Privilege, and Justice in Arts Organizing with Theresa Hwang, Dept of Places.

Commissions + Projects // Local Miami artists and collectives including Borscht Corp, Books Are Nice (Agusto Mendoza), Loni Johnson and Hattie Mae Williams, DJ Mack of Rhythm Foundation, Jillian Mayer, Miami Music Club With Ana Mendez, Serge Toussaint and others present new work and performances at all convening sites and events.

Lightning Talks // Do you want to present at the convening in Miami? Apply to give a Lightning Talk! Planned session topics include Nomadic Spaces, Transitions (Small, Medium, Large) , Good Intentions Aren’t Enough, and Epic Fail (and read more about them here). Each session allows for 8 presenters to share for 7 minutes each. Convening organizers will curate talks from your brief submissions. We encourage convening attendees to get involved.

Field Perspectives // Field Perspectives is a co-publishing initiative with Temporary Art Review and Miami Rail that presents essays on convening themes: accelerations, gentrification, transitions, and criticality, commissioned from Miami and national writers. Field Perspectives will same-page the field before we arrive to make for the most interesting and exciting debate. Stay in the loop for weekly essays by Michael Allen ​/ Preservation Research Office, Contemp+orary, Patricia Margarita Hernandez, Christopher Lee Kennedy, ​Gean Moreno, Joshua Simon, and Natalia Zuluaga. ​​

Common Field is now 432 members and counting. Since our official launch one year ago, 244 organizations and 182 organizers have joined us across 40 states. 60% of our organizations have more than 10 years of organizing experience; 61 members have been operating for 5 years or less; 17 organizations have been in the field for more than 40 years!
